This year the Super Bowl featured not one but two ads promoting website building platforms.  I definitely can’t go more than a few days with hearing ads on talk radio with lines similar to, “Want to start a new business?  Let us build you a website and list it for you on Google and Yahoo!”

While I can certainly laugh at the commercials and personally love using Square Space, I worry about the message these commercials send.  That in order to start a business, the first thing you need is a website.  The first thing you need in a business is an idea, structure and go to market strategy for a potential money making business (Franco Harris as a wedding planner isn’t something I’d invest in).

That is exactly why Matchnode always looks to focus on strategy first.  Its impossible for us to execute a successful campaign until we are comfortable with a business’s marketing strategy.  We have heard from a fair share of startups with websites ranging from clunky to extremely expensive.  Trust us that the quality of an initial website doesn’t reflect the fundamentals of a company.
